What is an Emergency Medical Technician?

 

There are three different levels of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).  Each level has more advanced skills and levels of training as the prior.  You become an EMT by going through a accredited and certified EMT training program which are located throughout the State of Ohio.  For more information on training and certification please go to our links page.
 

The three levels of the EMT are Basic, Intermediate and Paramedic.  The functions of each level are briefly described below:

The EMT-Basic

  • At this level you are the first line responder.  You are also the backbone of the EMS system.  You are able to assist with minimal medication and provide advanced first aid.

The EMT-Intermediate

  • At this level you now have more training then the EMT-Basic and not only provide the functions and skills of the EMT-Basic but also: Intravenous access, advanced cardiac therapies and medications, among other duties. 


EMT-INTERMEDIATE JOB DESCRIPTION
 

The EMT-Paramedic

  •  At this level you are at the most advanced level of pre-hospital care.  Your role in pre-hospital care is critical in the survival of your patients.  You not only provide the skills and functions that you learned as an EMT-Basic & Intermediate but also the advanced life saving skills such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Chest decompressions, Advanced manual and surgical airways, various medications for medical and trauma related patients as well as many other duties.
